10.10.07 - Review of Zolof the Rock and Roll Destroyer, Schematics (Reginition Records 2007)
Or: Rachel Zolof Has The “Schematics” To My Heart
by: John Devitt

So my favorite vocalist/keyboardist is rockin’ a potty mouth. And no, I’m not speaking of Reggie and the Full Effect front man James Dewees. I’m talking about Zolof the Rock and Roll Destroyer lead singer Rachel Minton. Yes, that Rachel Minton. The one you want to take on a first date to the batting cages so you can “show her” how to swing, hit up a malt shop, enjoy one milkshake with two straws, and then take her home without even thinking about sneaking in a kiss….just me then, huh?

Anyway, on her band’s newest album, Schematics, we hear our sweet little spunk rock princess drop the ‘F’ and ‘S’ bombs, thus crushing any notion that this kitty doesn’t have big, sharp, pointy teeth. But I beg you PLEEEEASE don’t let this get in the way of enjoying yet another chipper pop punk release from this Philadelphia-area quartet.

Though we do still hear most of the same type of lyrics (Can't stop, karate chops/Smash your head on the punk rock), there are some songs that are a bit dark musically. The songs aren't dark enough, though, to turn anyone off from their peppiness. And regardless, this album has all of the same adorable hooks that Zolof fans have come to know and love.

From the toe-tapping track “Can’t Stand It” (I can't stand it/I'm tearing out of this room/I wanna scream but I'm tired and running on fumes) to the riff-riddled “Death or Radio” (Let's hold hands and listen to shitty bands/Tossing records out the window/Now it's either death or radio/Who are you and where did you come from?), this album is just what the doctor ordered. That is, if your doctor prescribes fun-as-hell albums instead of medicine.

So if you enjoy having fun, playing with puppies, or have a pulse, then I would definitely recommend picking up this album. Concerning Zolof’s potty mouth lyrics, one can make many assumptions as to why they chose to go down that cussin’ path: maybe they’re trying to break away from that bubblegum pop-punk stereotype, maybe they are maturing their sound and image. Here’s my professional opinion as to why Rachel Zolof and her merry band would dare swear: because she fuckin’ felt like it!
